Abundance: Solar Power at the Clinic!

It’s easy to think about Haiti in terms of what it lacks…things like adequate water, shelter, healthcare and jobs.  These are all areas where FFL has come alongside our Haitian friends to give a helping hand. But anyone who has been to Haiti would tell you there are some things Haiti has plenty of and one of those is SUNSHINE!

We have long dreamed of harnessing that abundance to use as Solar Energy to fuel the facilities and projects of the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Fort Liberte. Previously, several small solar projects have been installed at the farm to fuel pumps for irrigation and to provide power for the farmhouse, bunkhouse and poultry barn.  Last week, another piece of the solar dream came true a small team from W.Va. (Dennis Legg, Kevin Hawkins and Brad Linville) completed the installation of solar panels, inverters and high quality storage batteries at the Eben-Ezer Clinic!

Another thing Haiti has an abundance of is bright and hopeful young people. A great part of this story was the assistants who shadowed the men and helped with the installation. Gasner St. Fleury and Tenson Audalbert were on the job and “asking a lot of great questions” all week, according to Dennis Legg. Both Tenson and Gasner are being assisted with tuition for vocational training by sponsors of our Higher Education Fund. Part of the hope for the future of Haiti depends on an educated and skilled work force and opportunities to learn and to work. We are thankful for those who invest in them.

By week’s end, the project was completed, and now the Clinic has full time electricity for the first time, powering light bulbs, fans, a refrigerator for medications and lab equipment. By 8:30 in the morning, the batteries are fully charged! Dennis informed us that in the three weeks previous to the solar installation, Clinic manager Celius St. Fleur had purchased 41 gallons of diesel fuel at over $3.00 per gallon. The energy savings will be significant, and allow us to use more of precious dollars donated to the clinic fund to much needed medication and treatment!

If you’d like to help with continued expansion of solar energy projects, or donate to the Clinic, or help young people with training through the Higher Education fund, you can DONATE HERE. When you help, the abundant blessings are doubled- for yourself and for those you help- and God is praised.
